Shin Seung Hun, the alleged "king of ballad" has released his seventh album, Desire to Fly High. Fans of this balladeer will not be disappointed with his latest musical offering.

The Prologue [RealAudio] works well for this CD. It's slightly longer than most intro pieces, and does a good job of setting the tone for the following song. It's a nice blend of African and Asian sounds.

I know Junsulsokae Noogoongachuhrum (Like Someone in a Legend) [MP3] sounds like it's something out of The Lion King, but the truth is, this sort of quasi-African music has been around longer than that movie.

The third cut on the CD, Gajahnah (You're Leaving) [RealAudio] is more in the style that long-time fans have come to expect of Shin Seung Hun. This is a ballad in Shin's classic style.

Uhmmayah [RealAudio] is an upbeat disco-ish song. It's jazzier and lighter than Gajahnah. The real strength of all the songs on this CD is the singer himself -- although this is not my favorite style, I like his pure tones. There's not a lot of pretense or posing in his music.

The guitar prefacing Naeahnui Geuneh [RealAudio] is a nice touch. This is another ballad typical of Shin Seung Hun's previous albums. It moves slowly -- there is no hurry with this type of song.

Shin Seung Hun breaks away from the ballad again with Good bye my love [RealAudio]. This is far from a rock song, and not even really edgy enough to be a pop song, but it's livelier than most pieces on the album.

Eebeul Geuhee (Since Then) [RealAudio] tries to evoke a mournful, Mediterranean spirit in its orchestration, while Uhneu Muhtjinnahl [MP3] starts out sounding as if its being performed in an old-time piano bar before morphing into a lounge tune. Seulpeun Guhjitmal (A Sad Lie) [RealAudio] is a pretty ballad that shows off the singer's voice on the sustained notes.

I like the "salsified" pop sound of Change [MP3]. This is a good song for listening cruising in the car with the windows down on a sunny day. It's also a good song if you want to practice for that upcoming Open Latin ballroom dance competition.

Rounding out the album is Forever [RealAudio], a pop tune set to a disco beat. This song, which reminds me of the theme to ChiPs, is based on a synthesized sound track. Shin has taken pains to vary his style and sound throughout the CD which is admirable.
