SURVEY FINDS 62.4% OF KOREAN-AMERICAN COLLEGE STUDENTS BOUGHT OVER THE INTERNET IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS

YONKERS, NY (5/19/00)--At this spring's Kascon (Korean American Student Association) event held at Rutgers University, a survey was given to the attending Ivy League College students. Of the 377 responses:

  • 80.8% prefer to read or listen to English, versus 13.7% for Korean.
  • 98.1% use the Internet1x

Of the 98.1% that use the Internet

  • 81.4% Access the Internet five or more times a week.
  • 62.7% Spend more than three hours a week online.
  • Most connect to the Internet to read email 60.5%, but of those not connecting for email 42% connect for entertainment, 27.5% for general news, 12% for financial news, 10.5% for games, and 8% for videos and Webcasts.
  • 62.4% have bought something over the Internet in the last six months with 7.8% of them having purchased over the Internet at least five times in the past six months. 17.7% Spent over $500 dollars on a purchase with 61.4% spending at least $40 on their average purchase. Purchases focused on computers 25.6%, clothes 17.7%, CD's 17.4%, and books at 16.9%.
  • 24.6% Surfed with some form of broadband connection (connection speeds exceeding that of the fastest 56K telephone modems).
  • Not surprisingly AOL is used by 48.7% of the surfers, however, 24.3% use a FREE service such as NetZero. Most, 77%, do not plan to change their present Internet service provider in the next 6 months.
  • Surprisingly 39.8% said they would pay to watch videos over the Internet. Of those saying they would pay, 63.8% were willing to pay $1-5 /mo., 30.7% were willing to pay $5-10 /mo., 4.8% were willing to pay $10-20 /mo., less than 1% were willing to pay more than $20 / mo.
