SBS Streaming Music Show

Many fans of Korean music are unable to watch Korean television programs: If you live in Midwestern U.S., the closest you're going to get to Korean TV is the half-hour show of South Korean news included in SCOLA programming. Luckily, the Internet can provide access to many of the popular music shows televised weekly from Seoul and elsewhere.

For instance, you can watch an hour of your favorite stars [ASF] on SBS thanks to the streaming format and high-speed connections. This particular show is based around a pop chart countdown, so you should get at least a glimpse of all the hot artists. The show opens with a short chat with CLON and moves on from there. Here you'll see the stars, Lyang-hyun and Lyang-ha (Twin Power), perform their soon-to-be-cult-favorite, Choomee Mwuhgillae [ASX]. These kids are too much -- its Sesame Street meets hip-hop. Next up on the show is Lee Hyun Do and Bbiaero [ASX]. This single also features D-BASE and Jed, and it's tight despite that "knock-knock-knock" line. Warning -- The commercials, which can be entertaining, take up a huge chunk of time.

After the commercial and a production with a plethora of back-dancers, you can watch the quiet performance of Jo Sung Mo's Gashi Namoo (Thorn Tree) [RealAudio]. Compared to the previous number, this is one of utter simplicity -- just the singer and a piano. Then it's time for the songs battling toward the number one spot. First up is Aesoo [ASX] by G.O.D., a pretty pop-py tune. Have you noticed how many groups are wearing white and black suits during these live performances?

After G.O.D. finishes up, H.O.T. appears (dressed in black) for a little clip. A number of artists follow with their own Inki Gayo blurbs: Baby Vox does a cheer, Kim Hyun Jung sings a short tune, Fin.K.L. does a decidedly odd set the concludes with a Old McDonald-like chant.

Then it's back to real performances. Up first is Lim Chang Jung with Nahae Yuneen [ASX]. This song has more personality when viewed as a live performance -- on the radio it can sound rather flat. Again, notice the white suit. Is that Roo'ra up on stage with the hosts? I guess they're just getting together for nostalgia's sake. They all look pretty good, but I hope they're not thinking about getting back together, because I like Country Kko Kko and hope Lee Sang Min sticks with it.

Lee Sang Min is a busy guy, and obviously the real reason behind his appearance is to introduce the new group he and Chae Rina (of Diva) are producing, Chakra. This group of four young women performs Han [ASX], the second track off their self-titled debut album.

After Chakra, you can see Yoo Seung Jun singing Sojoonghan Sarang [ASX] (also in a white suit). Shown are cute "little kid" pictures at the beginning of the song -- is it really him? Also, all those tiny little girl backdancers are too adorable for words.

Someone at the top must be dictating the show's fashions, because Turbo shows up dressed just like everyone else for its performance of CyberLover [ASX]. After this performance, Turbo and Yoo Seung Jun collaborate on Say You Say Me, which starts out fairly recognizable, but then disintegrates into a rap war otherwise known as Ghetto Supastar.

The show wraps up by telling who has the number one song (I won't tell you, only to say it's between G.O.D. and Jo Sung Mo), so if you want to know who it was, you have to watch the whole thing.
