from MUSIC ROOM:
MPEGs, RealVid's, & ASF's

If you're looking for music videos, it helps to be open to a variety of formats. MPEGs provide great quality and style, but can be difficult to download. RealVideo is a lot easier to view because it is often available in a streaming format, but the video quality is only as good as your connection to the Internet. A lot of people are starting to encode videos in the ASF format, which will also stream, but seems to have better resolution than RealVideo does. Here you will find examples of each format.

I'm a big Bijou fan, and I really like how Choi Dabi changes her looks from video to video. For It's Okay [RealVideo] she's cut her hair short and looks quite cosmopolitan with her black suit and stylish 'do. Jou Min sticks with his hair-over-the-eyes look.

Fly to the Sky's video for Day by Day [ASF] is preceded by an introductory video showcasing the duo with their attendant backdancers. The two boys seem to be rather smooth dancers, and they may remind you of more of ShinHwa than H.O.T. with their moves. This video is set in a carnival, giving it a "Fly to the Sky meets the Ringling Bros." kind of feel.

The story line for Sky's Youngwon (Forever) [MPEG] is pretty complex, so here is an outline for all you confused fans. The gist of the story is that two brothers (Jang Dong Gwuhn and Cha In Pyo) are separated when they are just small children. All they have left are pictures of each other and are using them to look for on another. However, during all the political violence, Cha In Pyo ends up shooting his brother without knowing who it was that he shot. At that point, Jang Don Gwuhn's girlfriend (Kim Gyu Ree) shows up and shows In Pyo a photograph. Cha In Pyo breaks down because he realizes that the photograph is of his brother, whom he had just killed.

S.E.S. had a big hit on their hands with Twilight Zone [ASF]. This video aims for a futuristic look, but most of it looks like it takes place in an EZ Bake oven. As an R&B song, it's not unbearable, but there's really not much too this video. Just before Twilight Zone came out, S.E.S. released a re-make of ShinHwa's T.O.P. (Twinkling of Paradise) [MPEG]. Sorry, but I think S.E.S. just reveals their bad dancing in this movie. They just don't make the moves look natural. And they don't do the rapping in the song, just the melodic parts of the song.

The dancing in the Love [MPEG] video is better than that in T.O.P., but still the trio often seems to lack energy (maybe it's because they're dragging around enormous shoes on their feet). They are not breaking any new ground with this video, arguably the best part is the scat at the very end.

For something a little different from S.E.S., watch the Japanese edition of Memory [MPEG]. This is more of a live performance than a music video. After they are done singing, you can watch them be interviewed, or more correctly, you can watch everyone around them talk over the girls' heads.

Personally, I am ready for legislation barring groups from using their own name in the lyrics. Usually it is hip hop and rap stars that stand on the stage singing about themselves, but Duke's Starian [ASF] demonstrates that technorock groups like their names, too. It must pop up on the screen a dozen times. Also, I'm not responsible for any seizures the viewer might suffer while viewing this video.

Although its a nice song, the beginning of Hush's Hush [ASF] video is silly and detracts from the rest of the movie. The black and white motif on the bed was attractive, while the whole video was unusually sexy for a Korean production.

Finally, here is a selection of MPEG samples. These aren't entire videos, just selections from various songs. They should download fairly quickly, and you can look at the quality to see if it's worth downloading a full-length MPEG in the future. You can download: Aida Crazy Love [MPEG]; Fin.K.L. Waiting For You [MPEG]; and Baby Vox Missing You [MPEG].
