My goal this week was to track down some female musicians and listen to their new sounds. Quality music is often overlooked whenever a major group like S.E.S. or Fin.K.L. release an album.
Seo Moon Tak, may be the best new rocker on the scene with a voice so throaty she makes Cher sound like a wimp. She cultivates that strong sound; she even took up boxing to strengthen her body to support her hard charging singing style.
The opening track on her debut album, Asura, is Chueum [RealAudio], a song that introduces her rock style via a lengthy guitar intro and a strong drum set. The second cut off the CD is Evergreen Love [RealVideo]. Has a likeable, warm colored video. The video for Loving Me, Loving You [RealVideo] seems a little darker, but the song Loving Me, Loving You [MP3] does suit her deep voice. Also available for download are D.N.A. (Devil and Angel) [MP3] and a sample of Boonshoo [MP3] from the same album. If you're intrigued by her music, be sure to watch her R.K.I. interview [RealVideo]. You'll have plenty of opportunity to see her live in the coming months. In March, she starts her 6-city S. Korea tour, and in April she is scheduled for an encore concert in Seoul.
Another new album to look out for is Kim Tae Young 2. If her voice sounds a little familiar, it means either you're a CLON fan or you didn't miss her debut album like I did. Tae Young did some vocals on CLON's third album, Dorawa. Oraen Banghwangeh Ggeut [RealAudio] is a pleasant ballad, but not too demanding. The second single off Kim Tae Young's second album is Imi Juhnghan Ibyul [RealAudio], and it sounds much like the first one.
On the sweeter side of things, we have Park Hae Kyoung. She recently released a debut album entitled Photos. The first single off the album, Gobaek (Confession) [RealAudio], is upbeat despite the implications of the title. The photography and story depicted in the Confession [RealVideo] video make more of an emotional impact than the song does when it stands alone. A second single, Deep Love [RealAudio], is also available.
One new Korean-American artist I've just discovered is Kelly. Kelly studies classical piano at UCLA but records?get this?technopop music. According to a statement made during a recent interview [RealVideo], she wrote, arranged, and produced all fourteen songs on her debut CD, New Millenium. Do you like pretty voices?
Out promoting her second album is Lee So Eun. Her first single Seobangnim [RealAudio] is available for download, which is a melodic song that showcases her beautiful voice. Another appealing voice that deserves some attention belongs to Lee Soo Young. The title cut off her debut album I Believe [RealAudio], complete with instrumentation reminiscent of traditional Chinese music, is very likeable.
