Soon we can look for new albums by Goofy, Jo Sung Mo and Turbo. In the meantime, here are a few recent releases.

One group I've developed a liking for is Karma. This group has a sweet guitarist, as is evidenced by the lead guitar playing on Hold On [RealAudio]. This song reminds me of Springsteen or Mellencamp. Another new song from Karma is Nae Eodoomggaji [RealAudio]. This song has very nice depth. The piano and the guitar work well together, along with the strong percussion line. Their lead vocalist has an appealingly rough voice. I don't know much about Karma, but I'm all for groups who challenge the dominate sound of a music genre.

The new solo album by Park Hee Kyung starts with Gobaek [RealAudio], I thought it had skipped and started in the middle of the track, but it turns out that it just sounds like it starts halfway through the story. The drummer in Deep Love [RealAudio] is hot, the beat is clean and the hi-hat use is solid.

The follow up album to the 1999 Daehanmingook is out. To make things really confusing, there are two 2000 Daehanmingook releases floating about right now, one by Chollian (also called "Original") and one by Kim Hyoung Sok with Ee Hi Soong. I've only had the opportunity to hear the "official" Daehanmingook, the Chollian release, although I've heard they are fairly comparable collections.

There are too many groups on the CD to list here, but the best songs from the 2000 Daehanmingook are the ones by Team and Honey Family. Team is a relatively upbeat hip hop group, led in part by Chang Ik, former producer of Diva. Team's contribution to the CD is Somang [MP3], a rap song based on the "Over The Rainbow" tune from The Wizard of Oz. Sometimes I wonder where musicians get these inspirations.

One of the reasons that the 1999 Daehanmingook was so popular was because it featured the Honey Family. They are also included in this collection, doing it Honey Style [MP3]. This song has a fun, call-and-answer structure.

Also included in the 2000 Daehanmigook is SideB who kicks in with Care [MP3], a nifty song. As a rap piece, it didn't grab me by the ears and shake me, but I liked groove introduced by the harmonica (or the synthesized equivalent).

Finally, you might be hearing a new song off Ahn Jae Wook's third album. I thought Goodbye [RealAudio] was a passable ballad in that it was pretty (the violin added a nice touch), but it doesn't seem to be going very far. I've been hearing the seventh cut from the CD, Baddest [ASX], on the radio lately. It's not that bad, really -- it's a little jazzy.
