Amidst rumors that its popular teen group H.O.T. is on the verge of retiring, SM Entertainment is promoting a new singing duo, Fly to the Sky. Consisting of teenagers Brian and Hwan Hee, Fly to the Sky is built on a soft hip-hop and R&B sound. Brian (who was raised in New Jersey) does the English rapping, but Hwan Hee takes the lead in a lot of the songs.
The short Intro [MP3] to the CD is probably has the hardest sound with its rapping and rhythm. It's a little misleading, since most of the album seems to be on the slower, softer side.
The title song of Fly to the Sky's debut album is In My Dream [MP3], featuring H.O.T. Clearly SM Entertainment is hoping H.O.T. fans will embrace Fly to the Sky as well. I actually liked the spoken-voice parts of this song -- they had a good rhythm and moved forward smoothly.
Day By Day [MP3] is an okay ballad. It didn't exactly grab me, but there isn't anything really wrong with it. Both Brian and Hwan Hee have sweet voices, and they sound better in this debut album than many other SM Entertainment groups did when they first got together.
The fourth track on the CD, I Don't Wanna Say Good-bye [MP3], has a little more spirit and edge to it. There is a lot of English is in it to me, and that doesn't impress me much, I think there is more artistry involved in making a good Korean rap. When I pick up a CD and see all the songs have English titles, I usually avoid it. However, I'd listen to this song again, so in that sense it is successful.
By the time I get to Fly to the Sky [MP3], I'm wondering if there is ever going to be a change in beat with the bass drum. If you've ever sat down at a drum kit and played your way through a Backstreet Boys album, you know what I mean. There needs to be more variation in the percussion line, otherwise listening through an entire album becomes a chore.
Overall, however, I'm still thinking that Fly to the Sky has a decent R&B sound going on. The sixth track is Wanna Be With You [MP3] and it reminds me a lot of Day by Day. I do like Brian's rapping style. I also like the funk of Everything [MP3]. I'm a sucker for a bass guitar. It's a little too pop to be true funk, but it is closer to a 1970s groove than anything else.
Naegehn Neomoo Yehppeun Geudae (Beautiful Girl) [MP3] is easy to listen to, but I just don't like it as much as I would like to listen to Jo Sung Mo, for instance. Sarangeul Dahlmeun Norae (A Song For Love) [MP3] is a little more upbeat than Beautiful Girl, and I think it is just a tad bit more interesting.
The opening measures of Warning [MP3] make me glad I stuck through the album that far. Again, the bass line makes the song. If my system was good enough, I'd probably just filter out the vocals and listen to the song as an instrumental.
Love Forever [MP3] returns to a clear R&B model, complete with whispered voice-overs about love and other important matters. The album closes with a remix of In My Dream (Extended Version) [MP3]. I think they should have done an extended version of their title song, but the extended In My Dream isn't bad.
