We have Radio City Music Hall with the "world famous" Rockettes, plenty of shopping on Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center and The Christmas Tree, and so much more.
When I was little, my family would try it's hand at ice skating. Everyone would glide across the ice at Rockefeller Center trying to keep up with the other skaters, except for me. I fell a lot. After the second or third fall I would leave the ice rink and stand and watch everyone else have fun. It came to a point that I liked to watch. I haven't changed at all during the years, I still watch. I wave at my friends and cheer them on but never take a step on the ice. The reasons are very real. What if the ice breaks under me? And worse yet, what if I fall? Lately when I fall on snow and ice, I tend to stay down until the Spring thaw.
To tell you the truth, I was never a real fan of Winter activities. Ice skating? I always thought that I would most likely break my ankles. Skiing? Please, the thought of me wearing one of those skiing outfits makes me want to fall into a dead faint. Plus, I'm afraid of heights ... and going fast ... and falling down while in a high place going fast. Sledding down a hill is not for me either. See above. So, you might ask, why do I like Winter? I guess it's the friendly holiday atmosphere and to tell you the honest truth, it's so much easier to walk without 90 degree heat and 100 percent humidity.
Walking is the still the best form of exercise for me. I would love to use the excuse of cold weather and the threat of frost bite as an excuse not to move around. But even I can't do that. And after a few minutes of walking you don't even feel the cold. In fact, I don't even wear a heavy winter coat anymore. A few layers of sweat shirts and a little jacket is just fine. As I walk, I warm up and I start to peel layers off. I never get overheated and I'm never cold.
I still watch my friends skate at the skating rink and I try not to smirk when they fall and have trouble getting up. After all, teenagers we're not. While they skate, I walk up and down Sixth Avenue and cross-town to Fifth Avenue for my exercise. I do my Holiday shopping at these times. Hey, I think shopping is a form of exercise1x And I'm an Olympic level shopper1x
If you're like me and not exactly the ski bunny type, take a walk like you did in the Summer. You'll be surprised at how different everything looks with a little snow around. Don't let cold weather stop you from going outside. Remember to keep the natural elements in mind, the same as you do in the other seasons. Wear a hat, protect your ears, and put on mittens. And don't forget the sunblock1x It's beautiful out there1x
