Koyote

Koyote is Kim Goo, Ja Seung Min and Lee Shin Ji. They have just released their second album, I Feel Something New is Being Born Within Me. Overall, this is a much more solid piece of work than their debut album that included the hits Shoonjung [MP3], Geumjidwen Sarang [MP3] and Mahnam [MP3]. The new release is also more "techno" than the last, and Koyote fans should enjoy most of the songs off this album.

Koyote leads off with Party Party [MP3], an energetic piece of technorave. There doesn't seem to be much to distinguish this song from any of the other techno tracks out there right now, although the female vocals are pretty good.

Touch Me [MP3] has a neat beat during the verse. Goo does some rapping in this song, leaving the melodic lines to Seung Min and Shin Ji. The English passages in Touch Me are nice (probably because at least two of the group members went to university in the United States) though I'm not sure why they didn't just sing in Korean.

The third track on the CD, Shilyun [MP3], seems to be Koyote's big hit this time around. The opening notes remind me a little too much of something out of Flashdance but hopefully that was an accident. Shin Ji's voice cracks a bit on the high notes, but other than that, I like Shilyun [RealAudio] a great deal.

Miryun [MP3] is a strong technorave song. This is not a song to listen to before you've downed your morning cup of coffee. The pounding beat will pummel you to death if you're not careful.

Ga(Go) [MP3] has very appealing vocals. I'm not sure what Shin Ji does differently in this song than she did in Shilyun, but she sounds much clearer and firmer in her singing. Goo does a little rap on this track.

One thing I like about this album is its variety. A lot of groups would have turned out a CD with a completely uniform sound?in this case, it would have been technorave. However, Gguteotnun Sarang (Endless Love) [MP3] is a ballad that couldn't be sweeter. I would buy this CD just for this love song.

Yeht Sarang (Old Love) [MP3] is another slow song. It begins with a tight harmony and then branches off into solo passages. Listening to these two ballads makes me wonder if Koyote might have missed their calling. Maybe they should give up the techno sound and produce more ballad-oriented albums like Jo Sung Mo does.

The further I get into the CD, the more convinced I am that Koyote should have re-ordered the songs on this release. While I thought the first track, Party Party was bland, Badaui Poomeh (Into the Sea) [MP3] gets high marks from me as a techno/dance tune. They should have opened with this song and moved the mediocre pieces to the middle.

Cinema [RealAudio] is an upbeat, happy track with good vocals. Goo makes a good showing in the rap, and Seung Min and Shin Ji do a fine job as well. Like most K-pop groups, they need to vary the drumbeat occasionally, but that probably only becomes apparent when you listen to the CD over and over.

The beginning of Yoohok (Temptation) [MP3] is promising, but overall I give this song just average marks. It's not tremendously bad, but then again, it's not tremendously interesting, either. Again, I'm taken by Koyote's slow songs. Haejin I Geori (The Street in Sunset) [MP3] is just so pretty. The piano adds a delicacy to the song, and the vocals are soft and tender.

Since I wasn't wowed by the original cut, the instrumental of Party Party [MP3] didn't really do much for me. Of course, if you loved the first version, this is just an added bonus for you.
