Don't be fooled by the title. There is absolutely no one in this tear soaked saga, really happy with his or her life1x Bring lots of tissues (preferably boxes if there are females watching) with you if you're going to see this one. Also watch out for the big teardrops from your female partners that might stain your sleeves. Please take out a flood insurance, it has never rained this much in years.
This story begins with two brothers and three sisters who reunite after 13 years of separation. When they were children, they lost their parents in a car accident and they become separated and grow up without knowing each other. Now they must confront the pain and anger that come with the fact that they were the children of second marriages with two separate bloodlines. Will they be able to successfully overcome their feelings of resentment and pain to put aside their differences and become a happy together family?
Veteran actor Lee Byung-Hun plays Seo Tae-Poong, a washed up backup catcher for a professional baseball team - now unemployed without any skills, and homeless. His playboy father's second marriage gained him two new stepsisters Chan-Ju (Cho Min-Su) and Mun-Ju (Kang Song-Yon), and a stepbrother named Ji-Seok (Song Seung- Hun), plus one half sister Yoon-Ju (Chun Ji-Hyun). But because of the bad reputation of Tae-Poong's dad, Chan-Ju and Ji-Seok ostracize Tae-Poong and never accept him as their true brother. Nevertheless Tae-Poong's simpleton personality doesn't allow him to carry any bitterness toward Chan-Ju and Ji-Seok, and he keeps on trying to approach them. He's kind of slow to understand what is really going on here so you really want to shake him by the shoulders to wake him up. The matter doesn't get any better because Tae-Poong has the hots for Ji-Seok's girlfriend Soo-Ha, who is being mistreated by Ji-Seok. Soo-Ha is atrociously (when I say this, I'm really being kind) played by Kim Ha-Neul.
Heartthrob Song Seung-Hun plays Seo Ji-Seok, a public prosecutor on his way up on the career ladder. We all remember him as Song Seung-Hun of the comedy sitcom Namja Seht Yoja Seht fame. He was seen on another similar unimpressive role in Seung-Bu-Sa. But his college boy face just can't seem to convince me that he is well suited for these types of tough guy roles. From all the characters in this drama, his character is the most brooding character of them all and you wonder what really is his problem. At least he has a pretty face, but an extremely angry pretty face at that.
Speaking of pretty faces, Ji-Seok's prosecuting partner (Yoon Chae-Rim) is played by a new talent, a Korean American actress Han Ko-Eun. Han, who first got her break doing TV commercials, makes her first acting debut in Happy Together. Commenting on her performance, my wife-a native Korean, claims that Han's Korean language ability is something to be desired for playing a major character. Being in a similar position as Han (a gyopo), I couldn't really tell her deficiencies, but I'll have to take my wife's word, since she is a native speaker.
Another fresh face making her debut is Chun Ji-Hyun, playing the youngest sister with a life-threatening disease, Yoon-Ju. Chun in real life is a highschool student, but in this story she plays a twenty-year old girl who grew up as an orphan. Already Chun Ji-Hyun fan clubs are reported to be following her every move, enchanted by Chun's young natural beautiful face that's good to look at even without makeup. In terms of her acting debut, I thought she passed the test. It will be interesting to see if this is the start of a long career and the beginning of another star in the making.
Happy Together is entertaining enough to keep you enthralled for a while but it's marred by poor acting especially by Kim Ha-Neul (yes I admit it, I really didn't like her and she was that bad) and poor type casting of Song Seung Hun. It would have more believable if Song was the washed up baseball player and Lee Byung-Hun was the public prosecutor. This is one pleasingly entertaining but a seriously depressing drama. One thing I have to warn everyone about this drama is that for those who have serious mental depression problems, do not watch. I repeat, do not watch this drama or it can lead to serious consequences to your mental health. You have been warned.
