Shaking Off Those Winter Blues . . .

. . . can be as simple as running away to a warm, sunny beach, however, there are other solutions that are a little easier on the pocketbook:

  • Exposure to bright sunlight is the best cure. Take long walks, participate in winter sports, or build a snowman. If your really good try ice carving1x
  • Add some color with a tanning session -- or experiment with tinted moisturizers, bronzing powders, or self-tanners.
  • Pamper yourself -- a new hairstyle or special outing can make your spirits soar.
  • Visit warmer climates -- at the tropical greenhouse of your local botanical garden or flower show. Swim in a health club's indoor pool.
  • Have an indoor picnic, complete with a blanket on the floor. Serve your favorite picnic foods to remember that hot summer nights are coming . . .eventually.
  • Plan your indoor time so you don't bury your head under the covers all weekend -- pursue a hobby, tackle a decorating project, subscribe to a book club, enroll in a class.
  • Essential oils, available at health food stores, can improve your well-being. To ease stress and headaches, sniff lavender, rose, or sandalwood -- for energy use tangerine, eucalyptus, rosemary, or mint.
  • For an instant de-stressor -- inhale deeply for four counts; exhale for eight counts. Repeat five times and you'll feel like a different person.

Low energy, sleeping more than usual, weight gain, and cravings for carbohydrates or sugars are symptoms of the winter blues. If these symptoms last longer than a few days, you may be suffering from a depression known as seasonal affective disease. Talk to your doctor. Treatments such as psychotherapy, light therapy, and medication can help.

Now smile . . .ah that's better1x
