The question: will you like the new Y.G. Family album, Famillenium? I think public opinion is going to be divided right down the middle. If you're taken with gangsta rap and a hard beat, this is the album for you. If you're offended by profanity and menacing young men with guns, don't even pick it up.

The "Y.G. Family" is headed by Y.G. (aka Yanggoon, aka Yang Hyun Suk) and includes rappers like 1TYM, Perry, JinuSean, and Q. The rap on this "family" album is pretty uniform, reminding me of JinuSean's early work like Throw Them Hands Up [MP3] and Gasoline [RealAudio]. Most of the album has a rougher sound than JinuSean's second. Not surprisingly, a majority of the tracks closely resemble the music put out by 1TYM such as 1TYM [MP3] and Good Love [MP3].

The first two cuts on the album, Oorineun Y.G. Family [RealAudio] and Y.G. Bounce [RealAudio], were written by Yang Hyun Suk and Perry. You should be able to hear JinuSean and Yang Hyun Suk perform in these tracks.

The next full cut is Suhdoolluh [RealAudio], also written by Yang Hyun Suk and Perry, along with Song Baekkyung. This is performed by Lexy. This song has a bit more of lyrical quality than those preceding it on the album. Song Baekkyung and Perry also collaborated on Heukgwabaek [RealAudio]. Heukgwabaek returns to the harsher sound typically associated with the Y.G. Family members.

1TYM fans will like Don Don Don - Cash It [RealAudio] which features Ahn Naeyoung from the Y.G. "New Group" (Y.G. Family is going to be producing a new all-female group in the future). Also written by Song Baekkyung, this song will hold no real surprises for the dedicated 1TYM listener. 1TYM ATTACK [RealAudio] will also encourage 1TYM fans to buy the CD.

Junjaeng Gwa Pyunghwa [RealAudio] is interesting in that it combines the work of JinuSean and D.J. Doc. The two rappers from D.J. Doc can rap fairly rapidly, so the words of this one move by at a pretty good clip. This produces a slightly different rhythm than the rest of the album.

Perry is primarily responsible for the hard sounds of S T P [RealAudio]. The Y.G. Family is obviously trying to cultivate a rougher, tougher image with their raps (not to mention their cover art). Most of their songs will probably not make it on to television due to profanity.

That being said, there is one ballad on the album, Saesangae ChookJae [RealAudio]. Written by Kang Eunkyung, this song suggests that somewhere in the Y.G. Family someone is thinking of something other than posing for photographs with automatic weapons.
