After seven months of silence, SechsKies (known as "the Jekkies" by their devoted fans) has released a fourth album, which is titled Com'Back. To me this is a better CD than previous ones. Pre-release publicity indicates that the members of Jekkies actually took some music lessons during the past year.
The title cut off the album, Com' back [RealAudio], demonstrates their new sound. Com'back [MP3], is a tight techno tune (it's a love song, believe it or not). In rhythm, it is slightly more uptempo than Roadfighter [MP3] from their third album.
Yaegam [RealAudio] is another love song written more like a traditional ballad. It has a bit of a Las Vegas lounge show sound, and although I thought the lyrics were sweet, the song itself didn't grab me. It's slower than Couple [RealAudio] from the SechsKies Special 3.5 album, but has that same bouncy beat underneath it.
I really like Love Forever [RealAudio], a dance tune with snap. The lyrics to this song were written by Yoo Yoo Jin and the music was composed by Shin In Soo. I'm not really wild about the spelling and crowd scenes in the middle of the song, overall it's a good effort.
Controversy rears its ugly head with Bi (Rain) [RealAudio], written and produced by group member Eun Jiwon. Rumor has it that this song has been banned from Korean radio/television due to "sexual content." It probably should have been banned for profanity from what I can tell.
Summer in Love [RealAudio], written by Lee Sung Ho, starts out with the sounds of the beach. The feel of this sound is reminiscent of the earlier track, Love Forever. This has a beat bordering on dance and slightly techno underpinnings. It might be best for the Jekkies to leave the English lyrics alone next time.
Kim Jaeduk wrote and produced A+ [RealAudio], another song that may never reach the Korean airwaves due to profanity (in English, so it may slip by). It's a pretty decent rap song, but where's the originality in borrowing the language and automatic weapons from the American hip-hop scene along with the sound?
Moibiuseuaddi (Moebius Strip) [RealAudio] gets my vote for the coolest song title of the year. The subtitle to this song is "The destined, inevitable relationship that cannot be severed even if it tried to [disconnect itself], that will be connected again, anyway." If you don't understand that, you've never played with a Moebius Strip.
Giyukhae Jullae [RealAudio] is a remix of a ballad [RealAudio] off SechsKies 1--apparently they didn't get it right the first time around. Jekkie Lee Jaejin wrote and produced Rigoletto (Yujahae Maeum) [RealAudio], a song about a failed and exhausted relationship. This is a calm ballad and very easy on the ears. Smile again [RealAudio] by Jo Eun Hee is also a ballad, this time about unrequited love.
Geunyuhga Namgigo Gan Sunmul (The Gift That She Left) [RealAudio] was written and produced by group member Kang Sunghoo (Mickey). This was a really strong ballad that would have been even stronger with a real drummer instead of a synthesizer providing the rhythm. Jang Soowon turned out Missing You [RealAudio], a song that's not quite slow enough to be a ballad, but not quite fast enough for dancing. The rap section was amusing.
Juk was written by Go Jiyoung [RealAudio]. This rap song is about separation and loss. The guitar is pretty hot and the rap flows smoothly. Geudaero Mumchwuh (Don't Move) [RealAudio] is a really different song for SechsKies. This is a collaborative effort with X-Teen, and it sounds more like X-Teen than the Jekkies. That's not your imagination, it really is the Inspector Gadget theme song playing in the background.
I am philosophically opposed to remixes, particularly when a group packs four of them onto a single CD (five of them if you count Giyukhae Jullae). The mix cuts are: Com' Back [RealAudio], Summer in Love [RealAudio], Moebiuseuaddi [RealAudio], and Smile again [RealAudio].
