Take a dirt bath with Thailand's elephants and play golf "Asia" style. . .

It's not to early to make your plans to attend Thailand's Elephant Round-Up scheduled for the third weekend in November in Surin, located in the northeast part of the country. The annual event re-enacts a medieval war elephant parade and shows the gentle pachyderms' strength and intelligence. Folk dances and cultural performances are featured. This is a great opportunity to start a collection of elephant figures from the beautifully carved pieces available in Thailand.

If you're in western Thailand later in November, bogey on over to the Bridge on the River Kwai for a week-long sound and light show at the famous World War II landmark.

Did you know that elephant are, sort of, right- or left-tusked as we are right- or left-handed? A lovely image of a Thai elephant with her baby appears in the Anatomy of an Asian Elephant describing the physical characteristics and habits of the animal.

SeaCanoe explores the Phuket West Coast of Thailand from November through April. The protected Phang Nga Bay offers calm waters for kayakers 10 months of the year. The ecotourism company's interesting page details the equipment used for its natural history tours.

Bangkok, Thailand's capital, is high on many people's list of favorite destinations. The city, dominated by the gilded Grand Palace, is dotted with temples frequented by orange-robed Buddhist priests. The Thais drive a hard bargain in the market, but the rewards are worth it. Silks, jewelry, pottery and even furniture that can be shipped back home are of fine quality. An elephant umbrella stand from Thailand will make you the envy of your friends.

Bangkok boasts two of the most esteemed hotels in the world - the Oriental and the Regent. There is no better living. Synthetic material is unknown in the hotels' opulent suites. Furniture carved of indigenous wood commands the living area. Huge beds covered in the finest textures guarantee the weary traveler a good night's sleep. A beautiful desk area invites one to write a letter on the sophisticated hotel stationary, which you will take home to use again. The hotels' enormous bathrooms are tiled in seductive shades and elaborate fixtures leap from the Jacuzzi, sink and shower. For a glimpse, see Travel & Leisure's best awards page.

A couple who capped a "whirlwind 17-year courtship" with a five-month honeymoon in Thailand has assembled a spectacular photo journey through the scenic country, including the Royal Palace in Bangkok.

The comprehensive Thailand Travel Guide main page has links to just about anything you need to know about the country, such as information on passport and visas, touring, dining, shopping and transportation.

The Association of Thailand Hotels has the goods on accommodations with rates.

Hello, birdie

Travel to such far-flung places as Thailand needn't keep the golfer from his passion. Links Around the World describes the joys of golfing the more than 200 "un"-crowded courses in the Asian country, including those designed by Nicklaus, Dye, Robert Treat Jones Jr. and Desmond Muirhead. The Hot & Spicey Co. has deals and discounts for golf tours. Links Around the World provides illustrated information on courses in many other countries, plus stats, tournaments weather and merchandise.

Carnival scores a Triumph

The latest addition to the "Fun Ship" fleet debuted in August with a decidedly continental flair. The 2,758-passenger Triumph has an Underground Tokyo video parlor; Club Monaco casino; Viennese cafe; English pub and French restaurant. Many of the elegant rooms are pictured on the ship's page.

The Triumph's New England/Canada cruises in September and October is an opportunity to sail aboard the new superliner during the fall foliage season.
