NRG Remembers . . .

As you may have heard by now, Kim Hwan Sung of the pop group NRG (New Radiancy Group) succumbed to pneumonia June 15. Although only in his nineteenth year, Hwan Sung was an important part of NRG and had been with the group since its debut in 1997. To mark the passing of Kim Hwan Sung, we have collected all the available NRG links and included them here.

One of the notable items in Kim Hwan Sung's career is that he has was not one of the members cut from the line up of NRG. He was with the group in the beginning, and even when the number of members was cut from six to five, and then down to three, he remained part of the group. Early NRG fans probably remember the group's first hit Halsooiteo [MP3], a hyperactive techno song with rap interludes. From NRG's second album, NRG 2 Race, came Messenger [MP3], a techno song with a harsher sound and sharper edge, and Sarangmandeulgi [MP3], another techno song but with a brighter sound.

In 1999, NRG released its third album, NRG 003. The first track on the CD, Nuh1x Na [MP3] is practically a ballad compared to the first two NRG albums. The sound is softer, possibly because only three comprised the group at this point. Bump [MP3] embraces the techno flavor of NRG's first two albums, but it isn't as frantic or crowded as the earlier songs. Face [ASX], the fifth cut on the album, tends toward rock music with the beat divided between the drums and the rhythm guitar. Shadow [MP3] has a groove going on but is still very fast-paced.

Although they aren't full-length, the following clips should give a good representation of NRG's sound on their third album: Prologue [RealAudio], Handel [RealAudio] (my favorite), Goowon (Salvation) [RealAudio] (very rock), Leave My Heart [RealAudio] (pretty), Baeban (Betrayal) [RealAudio] (techno/rap), Dark Angel [RealAudio] (R&B), Fresh Boy [RealAudio] (funky), and a remix of Goowon (Salvation) [RealAudio].

Fans missing Kim Hwan Sung might want to watch the video for The World For Us Only [RealVideo], one of the poppier songs released by NRG. Also available are a live appearance on SBS Inki Gayo [RealVideo] and a live performance on KBS [RealVideo]. And finally, if you want a last look at Hwan Sung, Soompi has an NRG gallery available.
