from MUSIC ROOM: Sechs Kies Farewell
As you probably know, the DSP group Sechs Kies recently announced their retirement. As a tribute to this popular group, we've rounded up a selection of MP3s chronicling their pop music career.
Pomsengpomsa [MP3] is from Sechs Kies 1 (released 4/97). This upbeat song filled with bursts of shout rap is fairly indicative of the Jekkie's early style. Perhaps the rather odd Baeshingam [MP3] is more likable than Pomsengpomsa. It's slightly calypso and although some of the vocals are weak, it is always nice to see a gayo group try something new.
From Sechs Kies 2, Welcome to Sechs Kies Land, everyone should recognize Gisadoh [MP3]. The group led off with this happy pop song in November 1997. Saranghanun Nuhehgeh [MP3] from the same album was one of their more successful ballads.
Apparently the group thought it needed to toughen up its act, because for Sechs Kies 3, Road Fighter (1998), it did a lot of techno bad-boy posing. The title song [MP3] was slightly louder and more emphatic than previous singles. Crying Game [MP3] was a bit slower in tempo, but the overall feeling generated by the song was the same. Fake G's (jouldaejah) [MP3] had a little more personality due to its orchestration and Moomohan Sarang [MP3] was almost pure techno. This is probably the weakest Jekkies' album, although the ballad Say [MP3] does standout.
Without question, Couple [MP3] was the biggest hit off the next Sechs Kies' release, a "special album" (1998). This soft, disco-influenced song produced a bouncy video and many screaming fans. The vocals in Beesang [MP3] are reminiscent of CLON, which is not necessarily a good thing, and Celebrate Tonight [MP3] was straight out of the era of Kool and the Gang.
After producing a live album, the Sechs Kies staged one more "come back" with their CD entitled Com' Back. The title song [MP3], with its techno/rock drive, was the best single off the album, even if some of the lyrics were completely lame. Also likable is Rigoletto [MP3] with the nice opening strains and decent vocals.
Now we are at the end of the Jekkie's career most of the six-some will probably return to school, minus Jiwon and Sunghoon who might continue as a quartet and Jaeduc who has talked of becoming a choreographer. Obviously, loyal fans are feeling a little blue, but at least they have one last Jekkies' album to with which to console themselves. Blue Note, the group's farewell album, is a compilation of previous releases plus four new songs
The first track is their farewell song, Bye [MP3]. The underpinning of the song is the cheering of fans at a concert, and the song is a sweet but undemanding R&B song. The ballad Pain [MP3] opens with fans chanting as well. One of the better songs on the Blue Note CD is Yahgsok [MP3] performed by Kang Sung Hoon. If I had to pick one of the Jekkies to go on in a singing career, it would be Kang. If you're going to miss the Sechs Kies now that they're gone, you will probably want to buy Blue Note just so you have a few of their greatest hits.
