from MUSIC ROOM: K-pop Stars' Commercials
Voted most likely to invoke nausea: Fin.K.L. in their BBQ Chicken [MPEG] (2.94MB) commercial. The singers themselves look quite fine, but check out that camera work -- I'm not sure it makes me want to run right out and pick up some BBQ1x
Much more amusing is Fin.K.L.'s drink spot [MPEG] (2.0MB). At first I thought they were on a train, but then realized it was supposed to be backstage at a concert (those are screaming fans, not subway noises). The poking and pinching is charming.
The first commercial I remember starring Fin.K.L. was for RaMyun [MPEG] (2.52MB). You know you've arrived when you get to do noodle commercials. Of all the Fin.K.L. commercials, I like this one best -- the girls are so young and cute playing their ramen marimba. What a different look from their older, sexier style they have since adopted.
Speaking of sexy, that's the look that S.E.S. (Fin.K.L's direct competition) is going for. Watch their Etude Lipstick CF [MPEG] commercial (4.52MB) and learn how to draw attention to your mouth whilst eating Jello?.
Not quite so erotic is the FibeMini Drink [MPEG] (3.96MB) in which S.E.S. starred. I would drink FibeMini if I really believed it would make me look as good as these teenagers do. Doesn't Bada look just a little bit like Martha Stewart with that haircut?
Both of these S.E.S. commercials make for an interesting comparison with the group's SaeWoo Kkang (1.98MB) appearance. With the children, the blue jeans and the chipper music, this earlier commercial demonstrates that S.E.S. was once so bubblegum it makes your teeth hurt. Apparently, sex appeal doesn't sell snack foods.
Finally, let's look at a couple of "boy" commercials. H.O.T. made a few very popular pitches. First, watch a series of Tic Toc commercials. Tic Toc 1 [RealAudio] is based on their hit song Bit [MP3]. Tic Toc 2 [RealAudio] is more successful because the beach scene might actually make a viewer thirsty. But the hyperactive Tic Toc 3 [RealAudio] is the best of the series.
The ads for H.O.T. cologne have a Calvin Klein attitude to them. The cologne ad [MPEG] (1.03MB) is based on a H.O.T. concert, with H.O.T. members sweating mightily while fans scream their names. It's a lot of flash and drama with not a lot of substance.
And finally, we have H.O.T. promoting Sunchips [MPEG] (2.25MB). This commercial is an adaptation of their single I-Yah1x [MP3], complete with orange hair and black leather.
