from LIFESTYLES: Past Lives
- Ever had a really strong deja vu?
- Are you attracted to a certain culture although it doesn't appear in your current family bloodline at all?
- As a child did you "know" things you couldn't or shouldn't have known?
I have that with Ireland. I have a very strong inclination toward the Celts. So wait, I'm saying because I drink Guinness and listen to U2, I was a barmaid in Dingle 800 years ago? Not really, it's just that people have affiliations with certain places and things because they're part of our souls -- carried over from another life. We do carry things over. Do you think Mozart could have been composing symphonies at age 5 if he didn't bring that knowledge from somewhere?
- Past lives have a connotation that carries with it either
Buddism or Shirley MacLaine.
If you were thinking, Buddism, don't be mislead. Western religions as well as Eastern have studied this " new age" belief. And trust me, the theory of reincarnation and past lives has existed long before Ms. MacLaine found out who she was in a previous lifetime.
My first interest in this field came while watching a talk show. The guest was Jenny Cockell, who told the story of how her whole life she had these really strong memories about a woman named Mary. She used to call her dolls certain names, because . . . those were Mary's children1x She had all of these memories of a specific town and people. When she became an adult she went to this town and do you know what she found? The children she had left behind 80 years ago when she died as Mary. A true story. Sounds fake? You wouldn't think so if you had seen this woman with her 90 year old son sitting next to her. Mmmm? it made my heart hurt. If you want to read about her story, I encourage you to check out: Across Time and Death: A Mother's Search for Her Past Life Children.
After seeing this I decided to try past life regression myself.
Perhaps that would explain my Irish fetish. I went to Tom Silver a well-known hypnotherapist in Southern California. It was an amazing experience. There was a point where he said, "one arm is attached to a helium balloon and the other a lead weight" and low and behold, one arm shot up to the ceiling and the other flopped down to my side. Wow, hypnosis works1x
After "traveling back" I discovered that I had been a man in Ireland sometime in the 1700's. Amazingly, I could see my wife and children; where we lived; what I did for a living, all very distinctly. I recalled being extremely happy. Was it my "writers" imagination or a real regression? I cannot say for sure. But it does explain why I am a sucker for a man with a lilt in his voice, a song with a Gaelic tune, and am drawn to all things green despite not having a drop of Irish blood in me.
Still not buying into the idea?
Why, because it's not scientifically proven? Yeah, well, how many of our spiritual or religious teachings have been? No one reading this has ever seen those guys called Jesus, or Budda, or Mohammed, but millions of people not only pray to them, they raise statues, build churches, and preach their "word".
Not willing to take the word of a writer, how about a Yale graduate and doctor with books translated in nearly thirty languages?
Brian Weiss is one of the forefathers of the belief in past lives. Dr. Weiss: "Because my work deals with the themes of reincarnation, past life regression therapy, and the reunion of soul mates, I have become the unofficial dean of reincarnation. I welcome this characterization, because I believe we do reincarnate until we learn our lessons and graduate. And, as I have repeatedly pointed out, there is considerable historical and clinical evidence that reincarnation is a reality." He has written several books, which have been translated into nearly thirty languages, on the subject: "Many Lives, Many Masters" "Through time Into Healing" "Only Love is Real" "Messages From The Masters". They are quick reads and truly fascinating1x
Not big on reading? How bout a trip to the video store? Hollywood, it is no stranger to the idea of past lives. In the 1970's Barbra Streisand and Jack Nicholson helped us ease into the idea in the film "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever." Or more recently, Kenneth Branagh directed and stared with Emma Thompson in "Dead Again." Both are worth a Sunday night rental1x
