Click here for instructions on how to use a Korean Word Processor on an American PC
For Microsoft Internet Explorer: (incl. AOL)
- Web sites published in Korean require Microsoft's Korean Language Pack (free) in order to properly display Korean characters.
- On the Microsoft Product Updates page, (under the
International Language Support
section) check the box next to Korean Language
Support.
- Click the Download button at the top of the page.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Windows Update downloads and
installs Korean Language Support.
How to use the Korean Language Pack
- Once you have installed the downloaded file, and restarted the computer, open your Internet Explorer browser. Now from the menu at the top of the browser choose "view," then "encoding" (in I.E. 4 you will choose "fonts" instead of "encoding"), then choose "Korean." This process will turn on the Korean interpretation and you will be able to read Korean text through your browser.
To read Korean, and write Korean characters into Email, Web pages, etc.:
- Install the Free Language Interpreter (IME 5.01). With the IME 5.01 you can read Korean and write Korean characters into Email, Web pages, etc. Click here for simple and detailed directions from Microsoft on how to install and use the IME with Internet Explorer. Make certain to select the download file "Microsoft Global IME 5.01 for Korean with language pack."
Click here to go directly to the file you will need.
For Netscape Navigator or Communicator:
- In the Options| General Preferences| Font menu section, set "fonts" to use one of the Hangul fonts for
both proportional and fixed font settings. For this you will need to have a Hangul
font already loaded in your computer (see
UnionWay below if you do not have
any Hangul fonts in your computer).
- Choose Korean (e.g., auto-detect, EUC-KR, etc.) at 'For the Encoding.'
- To make this change permanent (i.e. make Korean the
default encoding), you have to save options by choosing Save Options in
Options menu (In 4.0, choose Set Default Encoding in View | Encoding).
- If you are still having trouble in Netscape try reading about installing
Korean language at this Netscape link
people.Netscape.com.
